Reflecting on the meaning of life is an essential part of being human. Many of us seek a deeper purpose to motivate us each day and find satisfaction in making a meaningful impact. In today’s unpredictable world, companies alsostrive to have a clear sense of purpose to navigate challenges and KONE is no exception. The company is on a quest to shape the future of cities.
Our cities are undergoing rapid transformations
Today over 4 billion of us live, work and interact in cities. By 2050, it is projected that two-thirds of the global population will live in urban areas. This massive shift brings both challenges and opportunities, as cities strive to become more livable, efficient, and environmentally friendly.
Bigger and denser cities mean congestion, environmental, affordability and accessibility issues, and climate change. Tackling these challenges is a tall order for humankind but by working together we will have a significant opportunity to make a difference.
KONE is ready to answer to this call and KONE President and CEO, Philippe Delorme sees that the company can play a role.
“For me shaping the future of cities is mainly about taking an active role. We at KONE are not just bystanders adapting to the future; we are shaping it. Tackling climate change is a joint goal for all of us on this planet and we must act,” he states.
Hundreds of cities worldwide have already pledged to become carbon neutral, and more and more companies and cities are committed to ambitious climate targets. Cutting emissions related to construction operations when building new and renewing mature cities calls for new innovations. Built environments account for approximately 40% of global carbon emissions.
Safe, sustainable, and easy living in cities for everyone
With its bold new purpose, KONE is geared to take on this urbanization challenge. Delorme tells us why the company needed a purpose and what lies behind it.
“In a constantly changing world, KONE needs a crystal-clear purpose. ‘We shape the future of cities’ is our reason to exist as a company and it embodies our contribution and impact on the world. We want to create cities where people can move safely, sustainably, and effortlessly,” Delorme says.
KONE’s new purpose reflects its new ambitious strategy phase Rise and the direction the company has chosen. A strong purpose not only drives business success but also contributes to a better society.
For Kaija Bridger, executive vice president, people and communications, having a purpose is about being inspired and empowered.
“Work plays a big part in our lives. I personally want to feel that I can make a difference every day. I believe that this is something we all have in common, we all want to do something meaningful and be part of something bigger. Contributing to developing resilient and sustainable cities is a powerful aim,” Bridger says.
From a manufacturer to a city shaper
What does KONE, a maker of elevators and escalators know about the rapid transformations that cities around the world are undergoing?
Quite a lot, it turns out. KONE moves 2 billion people every day and the equivalent of the entire global population every week. For over a century, the company has worked closely with cities, owner‐developers, investors, architects, engineers, and contractors to enable cities to grow taller, greener, and more accessible.
KONE has a deep understanding of how our urban landscapes are being reshaped by digitalization, modernization, and sustainability.
“We know how to make people flow within cities and buildings easy and efficient. And we want to use this wide knowledge, data, advanced products, and solutions to make cities better places to live for everyone,” Delorme says.
We shape the future together
Bridger was closely involved in forming the new purpose as part of a cross-company working group. For her having a shared purpose is just the beginning.
“I believe that actions speak louder than bold purpose statements. Living the new purpose is about all of us KONE employees in all regions and on all levels. We need to work side by side with our stakeholders worldwide to help cities leave a positive mark on the planet instead of burdening it.”
Delorme proudly talks about how much the company has to offer in helping customers decarbonize by leveraging regenerative and other new technologies, optimizing material usage, and embracing circularity.
“The cities of tomorrow can become bastions of sustainability and social equity, ensuring a better quality of life for all their inhabitants. We invite all our employees, customers, suppliers, and stakeholders to shape the future of cities for the future generations.”
